Eligibility for VA Homemaker Home Health Aide Program

Veterans must meet the following three criteria to be eligible for home care programs:

They must be enrolled in VA Health Care.

They must meet the clinical criteria for the program. This is usually done via a doctor’s order stating that the person would benefit from home care services. From there, they should contact their social worker, who will refer them to a provider.

They must be eligible for community care. Once authorized, they can contact a provider such as Village Caregiving for home care services.

  • Light housekeeping: Our light housekeeping services entail dusting surfaces, vacuuming, mopping floors, loading and unloading the dishwasher, taking out the trash, cleaning toilets, making beds, doing laundry, changing towels, watering plants and removing floor clutter.
  • Respite care: Our respite care services relieve primary caregivers so they can take care of their health, pursue hobbies, participate in social activities and address other personal needs.
  • Meal prep assistance: We can cook daily meals or make them in advance for future use, following nutritional requirements. We can also take care of grocery shopping and offer eating assistance if needed.
  • Hygiene assistance: If your loved one needs hygiene assistance, we can help with washing, drying, brushing hair, toileting, undressing, dressing, brushing teeth and flossing.
  • Companionship: Our caregivers build genuine connections, engaging in conversations and participating in shared activities like games and walking.

The VA Homemaker and Home Health Aide (H/HHA) program caters to veterans who need help with daily activities, empowering them to live independently in their own homes. It also serves veterans of any age and individuals who are isolated or whose primary caregiver needs relief.

The program offers skilled individuals to help veterans with eating, grooming, bathing, dressing, grocery shopping and other nonmedical tasks. Home health aides and homemakers work for organizations with a VA contract.

The first step in this program is an initial assessment from a registered nurse to determine the veteran’s daily living needs. Home health aides and homemakers then offer regular, in-home support services based on a tailored care plan and receive supervision from a registered nurse.

Veterans can access various financial assistance programs such as:

  • Medicaid: Veterans eligible for this insurance receive healthcare coverage, including in-home care services.
  • VA Aid and Attendance (A&A) benefit: Housebound veterans or those needing help with daily activities receive a monthly pension to cover home care services.
  • Veteran Directed Care: This program gives veterans a specific budget to choose home care services that meet their needs.
  • Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC): This program offers financial assistance to family members caring for eligible veterans.
