The Caregiver of the Year Award is the highest honor we can bestow on our caregivers. This yearly recipient represents the pinnacle of Village Caregiving’s commitment to compassionate service, reliable support and safe living for those most vulnerable in our communities.
This year, we’ve seen the greatest expressions of empathy and dedication in our caregiver Yavonne Howe and her relentless pursuit of treating every client with respect and friendliness while going the extra mile to ensure they have every tool and resource they need to thrive — not just survive. Yavonne Howe: A Professional Profile
Yavonne Howe joined the Village Caregiving team two and a half years ago after more than a decade of working as a caregiver. Since she joined our team, she has worked more than 40 hours a week because she sees her role as more than a job. She brings positivity and compassion to her clients every day simply by showing up.
To her, the little things bring her joy and help her clients feel like family. She sees the big picture and brings realistic expectations while advocating for her clients’ needs. From showing up every day for cleaning and companionship to staying with people as they approach their last moments on earth, her heart for service knows no bounds.

The people who are lucky enough to have Yavonne in their lives know how special she is. Our team frequently hears how important she is to her clients — her passion for communication and natural empathy make everyone around her feel cared for. Her unparalleled commitment to her work brings her in every day, giving clients and their families peace of mind when they need supportive, everyday care.
Beyond her working hours, she visits her clients when they’re in the hospital or going through hard times so they know they can always count on her. She has a warm and caring spirit that has even brought requests that she be present when clients pass away. It is not uncommon for us to hear her praises and that her clients would not know what to do without her. We honor her in recognition of the countless lives she has left an unforgettable mark on.
Yavonne’s Defining Qualities
From doing regular check-ins to cooking holiday dinners, everything Yavonne does helps her clients live better and feel supported. She understands caregiving is an evolving role and continues to live up to it by being herself.
Commitment
Yavonne’s dedication goes beyond a standard schedule. She boasts near-perfect attendance and regularly adjusts her schedule to be present when her clients need her. She researches ways to make their lives more affordable, seeks out resources from unexpected places and takes it upon herself to make sure her clients have oft-forgotten necessities like furniture and phones.
Empathy
Yavonne has the unique ability to connect with anyone and gain a deep understanding of their needs. Their desires become her own — she moves mountains to advocate for the life they want and stands by their side as a friend and confidant.
Genuiness
Yavonne’s care for her clients is anything but shallow. She has a caregiver’s heart through and through, and believes every person she works with deserves her best. She cares without judgment and does everything within her power to help them keep their hearts at home.
Exemplifying Unwavering Devotion Every Day
There are countless stories that show Yavonne’s dedication to her role, but perhaps none so clear as her work with a veteran client. Even after making his way out of homelessness, this person was a diabetic and bilateral amputee who lived alone and did not have access to a working phone.
Yavonne immediately took this man into her care and initiated several operations that allowed him to get a phone so he could track his blood sugar and reach out to her whenever he needed her. Today, this client considers Yavonne family and looks forward to her companionship and assistance every day.
